Forensic Anthropology is an applied branch of physical anthropology.  Forensic Anthropologists act as neutral experts on human variation, applying that in a medico-legal context.  Forensic Anthropologists can be used by medical examiners/coroners, NGO's, Government agencies and others to help in identification of skeletal material.  Most forensic anthropologists can also provide forensic archaeological services as well.

Forensic Anthropologists

A professional forensic anthropologist will normally have a PhD in Anthropology and professional liability insurance.  There are other routes to practice but they are unusual.  In some states Board certification is required.  In other states , such as California, it is not.

There are very approximately 70 working forensic anthropologists in the United States with hundreds of people trained in the field.  A list can be found in Forensic Anthropology: An Introduction by  MariaTeresa A. Tersigni-Tarrant (Editor), Natalie R. Shirley (Editor)
